Abstract

"...Hoy día, 1.100 millones de personas viven con menos de un dólar estadounidense al día (el umbral de pobreza reconocido internacionalmente): 430 millones en Asia meridional, 325 millones en à frica al sur del Sahara, 260 millones en Asia oriental y el Pacífico y 55 millones en América Latina. Demasiados niños viven vidas que se caracterizan por el hambre y las enfermedades, y con demasiada frecuencia sucumben a muertes prematuras. Además, otros 1.600 millones de personas viven con uno a dos dólares al día y a veces caen temporalmente bajo el umbral de un dólar al día. Para permitir que todas estas personas vivan con dignidad, los ocho objetivos que deben lograrse para 2015 son: 1. Erradicar la pobreza extrema y el hambre. 2. Lograr la enseñanza primaria universal. 3. Promover la igualdad entre los géneros y la autonomía de la mujer. 4. Reducir la mortalidad infantil. 5. Mejorar la salud materna. 6. Combatir el VIH/SIDA, el paludismo y otras enfermedades. 7. Garantizar la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente. 8. Fomentar una asociación mundial para el desarrollo. Todos estos objetivos son indispensables y requieren una acción compleja y coordinada.
