Abstract

This paper exposes the methodology of the Macroeconomic Imbalance Procedure (MIP), according to the methodology developed by Eurostat. The system is based on a scoreboard of a set of indicators, defined as a filter to identify the potential risks in the national economies in the European Union and issues for which a closer analysis is deemed necessary. The results of these reviews forms the basis for further steps under the MIP whereby a graduated approach is followed reflecting the state of imbalances. This study is a coherent and comprehensive presentation of the MIP as a statistical tool which can eventually lead to identify potential risks in the euro area Member States.
