Een nieuw jaar, een nieuwe start? Zelfdiscipline, goede voornemens en gezonde voeding

Abstract

De goede voornemens die we bij de start van elk nieuw jaar maken om gezonder te eten, sneuvelen nog voor januari voorbij is. Vooral vanaf juli gaat het bergaf en laden we onze winkelkar almaar voller met ongezonde voeding. We ontwikkelden een empirisch kader om het zeer heterogene voedselkeuzegedrag van mensen te analyseren. Daaruit blijkt dat jonge mensen en mensen met een lager inkomen gemiddeld meer problemen hebben met zelfdiscipline. Dit zorgt voor meer variatie in de keuzes van een individu afzonderlijk dan over individuen heen. Als overheid heeft het wellicht weinig zin om enkel de prijzen voor ongezonde voeding op te trekken. Sensibiliseren rond zelfdiscipline kan een goede alternatieve strategie zijn.
