Een economische blauwdruk voor het internationale wegwielrennen

Abstract

De afwezigheid van een economische hefboom naast sponsoring, de zwakke economische regulering, de (weg)zappende sportconsument en de dichtslibbende openbare weg bedreigen het huidige wielerbusinessmodel. Mecenassen en opgeblazen kijkcijfers stuwen de niet-marktconforme budgetgroei van wielerteams. Externe sectorversterking, met aanpak van het managementdeficit leidt tot een duurzamer businessmodel. Een versnelde uitbouw van een voldragen vrouwelijke competitievariant is prioritair. Een drastische reductie van het aantal renners per team en innovatieve wedstrijdformules verhogen de spankracht en fanwaarde. Externe sectormanagers en –artsen zijn een hoeksteen in de professionalisering van het veiligheids- en gezondheidsmanagement.
