Abstract

In India, research in the field of social sciences have grown significantly during the last five decades. But so far there is no code of conduct or ethical guidelines in the country for social science research. Neither the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) nor the University Grant Commission the nodal organisations for sponsoring research in universities and research institutes have formulated any guidelines in CER. The subject has not received serious attention from social scientists. We do have a few studies on fieldwork experiences that touch upon ethical issues related to the researchers relationship with the respondents, confidentiality of information, autonomy of informants, etc. But these experiences have not been seriously debated.
