New Trends in Marathi Theatre: Relationship with Multicultural Indian Identity

Abstract

The Indian society has been multicultural for many centuries. But the texture of this 'multicultural Indian identity' has changed drastically in the last decade or so. Earlier, when two cultures came in contact, the circle of their own beliefs and social imaginary overlapped to some extent. But today, with a vast number of social imaginaries, there are hardly any overlapping spaces. In addition, every single person is acquiring many different and unrelated identities, making him fragmented. This is where the difference between the multicultural society in India before globalization and after globalization lies. On what shared grounds does one communicate? What happens to theatre? What are the problems that Marathi theatre specifically faces today and how are they dealing with this core political issue? The writers of the past in Marathi theatre were concerned about the core political issues of their times. Are writers of today so aware?
