Abstract

In China’s foreign affairs and security studies, the concept of the ‘neighborhood’ (zhoubian) has a special meaning that has changed gradually over time. As China has developed, its leadership has become more and more pragmatic in dealing with its relations with neighboring countries. This paper intends to explain the historical changes in these relations from 1949 to 2012. [ISDP Asia Paper].
