Abstract

Pedestrians and cyclists account for 60-80% of the fatal accidents in metropolitan areas . High rate of traffic accidents is as much due to perfunctory enforcement of rules as due to poor road traffic infrastructure. Improved road safety infrastructure in conjunction with systemic changes in transport and traffic establishments, enforcement strategies, signalling and technological measures can substantially improve road safety environment. Raised medians provided significantly lower pedestrian crash rates on multilane roads, compared to roads with no raised median. Similarly, Safety Shoulder Rumble Strips, Walkways and Sidewalks, Cycle Facilities, Speed Humps, Roundabouts, Bus Stops/ Shelters, road markings, and other road safety infrastructure can significantly reduce the fatal accidents on Indian roads
