Positioning the Diversity Perspective

Abstract

How can a European public sphere be recognized if we see one? Or, put differently, how can one determine whether a public sphere exists in a given social space? This paper problematizes the difficulty of analyzing the public sphere particularly in contexts of complex diversity, and indicates the necessity of applying a diversity analysis method for this purpose. In addition to the author's new reflections, this paper is also partly based on the research plan in the Eurosphere application submitted to the European Commission, his opening lecture at Eurosphere’s Kick off Conference in Bergen, 14 February 2007, and various discussions with Eurosphere partners in the Eurosphere Consortium during 2007.
