Practices of ‘Posthuman Diplomacy’ in the Digital Age

Abstract

This paper traces the influence digital technology has on diplomatic practices. It analyses whether available new media have substantially transformed the field to the point that it is appropriate to call parts of today’s approaches “posthuman diplomacy†since they have replaced the need for the presence of a real human being or, at least, paved the way for such a replacement. Federica Bicchi outlines the shifts in channels of communication between diplomats and ministries of foreign affairs and compares modern to traditional sources of gaining insight into those working on the other side.
