Abstract

Although the last three decades represent only the most recent episode of Egypt's opening up to the world?, their impact on the Egyptian economy and society seems much wider and goes much deeper than anything that Egypt had experienced before, this justifies the use of the relatively new term 'globalization'. The economic impact of this process of globalization involves the rates of consumption, investment and income growth, the distribution of income and consumption patterns, the rate of unemployment and the degree of satisfaction of basic needs. Its impact also extends to touch aspects of the quality of life that are not economic, but are major determinants of human development such as the quality of the environment, the sense of cultural identity and the limits of state power. This paper discusses the impact of globalization on only those aspects that could be regarded as major indicators or determinants of Human Development.
