Abstract

This paper identifies one of the main determinants of the dynamics in employment. NAFTA has not benefited substantially the conditions for economic growth and, consequently, the opportunities for new employment. Contrary to expectations, the analysis reveals lower importance for manufacturing in the growth rate of the GDP in regions and states. Activities related with commerce and services have reported a more generalized growth. The non tradable and those tradable activities relating local supply and demand have been the most successful in both profitability and survival. Therefore, the challenge is to encourage public policies that support clusters around the competitive activities in each state or region.
