Regional disparities in GDP and disposable income in Belgium

Abstract

Regional GDP is a key indicator in the assessment of the economic performance of the Belgian regions. But for assessing the wealth of a certain region, another important indicator is the household disposable income.In this paper the evolution since 1985 and the level of regional per inhabitant GDP and household disposable income for the Belgian regions are discussed. Other major series of the regional household accounts are discussed as well. Some forecasts (using the HERMREG model) about the future evolution of regional GDP and disposable income are also considered.One example is a big difference in the regional performance with respect to GDP per head on the one side and diposable income per head on the other side.
