Renewable Energy in the Asian Region

Abstract

It is becoming increasingly obvious that our world is facing an energy crisis that is combined with an environmental and climatic problem. The key challenge for this century and beyond consists therefore in developing new energy technologies that allow the generation of power in a sustainable, affordable, accessible, flexible, and environmentally-friendly manner. Renewable energy sources are having an increased contribution to the energy portfolio of many regions around the world. This paper will show a coherent strategy for Asian countries to a smart way to promote renewable energies and foster energy efficiency. Here investments in renewable energies are not encouraged as single solutions on one site without considering the whole region or the effects for other energy transformation technologies. The techno-economic model should be based on the methodology System Dynamics. This methodology allows simulating not only direct, but also indirect impacts and time lags via feedback loops of various economic, environmental policies and other geographical and social constraints for the diffusion of technologies on the electricity and heat markets. Strength of such a model is that it is very quick and provides immediate graphical results and can be combined with a graphical information system (GIS). For the depiction of measures against climate change as well as employment and regional growth effects the model will be extended by CO2 emissions and a macroeconomic component. This combination of a System Dynamics based energy system model with a macroeconomic component is a new methodological approach and guarantees a high quality monitoring system with regard to economic, environment and social sustainability.With support of such a high geographical, time scale (years 2005 until 2050) model resolution, policies and investments to promote renewable energies and energy efficiency on the demand side could become more focused and consequently could be done more efficient in Asian countries.
