Abstract

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean and Secretariat to the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC), is pleased to present the seventeenth volume of the Selected Statistical Indicators of Caribbean Countries (SSI). This publication represents a compilation of original nationally produced and officially published statistics on select indicators for the year 2003. Where available, 2004 and 2005 figures have been included. The aim of the SSI is to serve as a single source of Caribbean statistics on national accounts, balance of payments, trade, fiscal operations, retail prices, unemployment rates, tourism, exchange rates, population and labour force for the member countries of the CDCC. As far as possible, uniformity across tables and in the data elements is maintained. It is important to note that the figures contained herein are as reported by countries, and may, at times, differ from other ECLAC analyses and publications. The absence of complete time series data in any of the tables reflects the inability of some of the member States to provide all the information required. While improvements to data collection initiatives at the national level throughout the Caribbean subregion will strengthen the service intended by this publication, this Office seeks to minimize, if not eliminate, internal methodological and conceptual inconsistencies. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the data contained herein, and the user is reminded that these are subject to revision in the event that new statistics were nationally published just prior to this publication going to print. The Secretariat wishes to acknowledge the timely and consistent cooperation of the contributing national statistical offices and other official national statistics producers. This newest volume of the SSI can be found on the official website of this office at www.eclacpos.org. While a formal feedback mechanism is being developed to evaluate the usefulness of this publication to stakeholders, we would greatly appreciate receiving preliminary comments that would assist us in gauging its future structure or orientation.
