Abstract

The Central American Isthmus and the Dominican Republic: Analysis of the development of individual productivity and total factor productivity Abstract: This study presents a growth accounting exercise for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic. For the estimation of capital stocks, the report applied the methodology suggested by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) (2001). For the labour input, direct figures were used. Factor shares were computed from National Accounts and Household Survey data. In addition, the document presents other aspects related to the economic development of the countries, such as the impact of economic policies. Firstly, it estimates the potential product, a variable with a strong theoretical content which enables, for example a realization of a chronology based on the shocks, both positive and negative, as well as internal and external, suffered by the economies in question. Secondly, by subtracting the potential from the observed output level, a measure of the economic cycle was obtained. This measure was contrasted against the signal obtained by means of applying the Hodrick-Prescott filter, and it was used to identify cycle turning points, as well as to explore the synchronization of the economic cycles across the Central American Isthmus and the Dominican Republic. Finally, time-changing expenditure multipliers were estimated.
