Abstract

Panama: Economic evolution during 2007 and Outlook for 2008 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2007, the Panamanian economy expanded by 11.2% marking the fourth consecutive year of intense growth in a context of improvement of the fiscal and labour conditions. The non financial public sector registered a surplus equivalent to 3.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP), and the rate of open unemployment equalled 6.4% in august, in comparison to 8.7% in the same month of the preceding year. This favourable macroeconomic development gave support to the goals set out for 2009 by the program "Strategic Vision for Economic Development and Employment towards 2009". Despite these achievements, 2007 witnessed record levels of inflation and the current account deficit. In December the consumer price index accumulated an 12-month increase of 6.4%, and the current account deficit reached 1,577 million dollars (8% of GDP), three times the level of 2006.
