Abstract

Guatemala: Economic evolution during 2007 and perspectives for 2008 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2007, the Guatemalan economy grew by 5, 7%, constituting the best development of the current decade. The growth rate was mainly attributed to the buoyancy of private consumption, brought on by an intense flow of remittances (12% of the gross domestic product GDP). This income partly compensated the substantial trade deficit (17% of GDP) while the current account deficit (5,1% of GDP) was amply compensated for by the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) and other capital funds. The annual inflation was 8,7%, partly attributed to external supply factors, due to which the inflationary goal of 2007 of 4 to 6% was not reached. The deficit of the central government equalled 1.5% of GDP (1.9% in 2006).
