Abstract

Costa Rica: Economic evolution during 2007 and perspectives for 2008 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2007, the real gross domestic product (GDP) of Costa Rica grew by 6,8%, compared to 8,8% in 2006. Despite the fact that the country experienced a substantial downturn, the growth rate remained robust and superior to the average rate of the present decade. The GDP increase was mainly attributed to the increase of fixed gross investment and exports. The GDP per inhabitant grew 5%, extending the dynamism observed over the last six years. Inflation experienced an upturn in 2007, reaching 10,8% by the end of the year (compared to 9,4% in 2006). The public sector balance presented positive results for the first time in the last three decades, while the rate of unemployment was reduced to the lowest level experienced in the current decade. The current account deficit equalled 5,7% of GDP, a percentage point higher than the previous year.
