Abstract

Honduras : Economic evolution during 2006 and Outlook for 2007 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2006, the expansion of the Honduran economy accelerated reaching a growth rate of 6%. With a forecasted growth rate of 4.1% in 2007, the numbers represent the greatest variation since 1993. The gross domestic product (GDP) per inhabiant increased, and the rate of national unemployment dropped to 3.5%, although the rate of informal employment remained high (30%). This buoyancy was associated with increases in investment and private consumption, which were brought on by the intense flow of family remittances (26% of GDP). For its part, year on year inflation decreased to 5.3% (7.7% in 2005). In the external sector, the trade deficit reached 26% of GDP (21% in 2005). Both the trade and the primary income account deficits were financed with current transfers, mainly family remmitances. ,As a result the current account deficit was small (1.9% of GDP).
