Mortalidad y atencion de salud materno infantil

Abstract

El nivel de mortalidad infantil en las reducciones indigenas de la IX Region de Chile, censadas en 1988, es de 45 por mil, mas del doble del nivel nacional en 1985. Las mujeres con 7 o mas anos de estudio registran un nivel de 41 por mil y en los hogares en donde se habla mas frecuentemente la lengua mapuche la mortalidad es superior (53 por mil) que en aquellos en donde predomina el castellano (41 por mil). La tasa de mortalidad materna podria ubicarse alrededor de 290 muertes por 100 mil nacidos vivos, frente a una cifra de 44 para el pais (p.101). Cerca del 70 por ciento de las entrevistadas acudio a un profesional para su ultimo parto y un 23 por ciento recurrio a un agente de salud tradicional. La atencion profesional es mayor entre las mas jovenes, mas educadas o que viven en hogares donde se habla el espanol. Al parecer la poblacion de las reducciones ha aumentado su acceso a la medicina occidental aun cuando no comparta los valores subyacentes.
