Ambivalencia de actitudes en la preferencia por familias pequenas

Abstract

Con el objeto de analizar las definiciones sociales de familia "grande" y "pequena" en areas rurales de America Latina y examinar la percepcion de ventajas y desventajas, se desarrolla un modelo hipotetico que incluye relaciones entre patrones de ventajas y desventajas, diversas medidas de preferencias y el interes por el conocimiento de anticonceptivos. El analisis empirico, a partir del PECFAL-Rural, evidencia actitudes que favorecen un tamano grande de familia (10 a 12 hijos) por sus ventajas tradicionales aunque se perciben tambien sus aspectos negativos. Por otro lado, las mujeres estiman que las familias pequenas (3 a 4 hijos) tienen ventajas y escasas desventajas. A pesar de un patron actitudinal global que favorece la familia pequena, la ambivalencia es comun, el numero de hijos definido como "mejor" es de 5, la mayor parte de las mujeres no ha discutido el tema con sus esposos y la conciencia de las implicancias del tamano familiar esta aun latente.
