América Latina: situación actual de las estadísticas demográficas; borrador para discusión

Abstract

Se sugieren algunas ideas para mejorar la situacion actual de las estadisticas demograficas de America Latina. En cuanto a los censos de poblacion, se senala que los paises deberian atenerse a sus propios requerimientos para seleccionar los temas a incluir en la cedula; con unas preguntas adicionales se podria averiguar sobre los diferenciales de la fecundidad y la mortalidad; la pronta publicacion de los resultados es de vital importancia para la utilizacion oportuna de los mismos. Respecto al Registro Civil y las encuestas demograficas, se concluye que las ultimas deberian emplearse en todos aquellos paises en que los registros no son de calidad buena o aceptable, ya que no se puede seguir esperando 5 o 20 anos para que el funcionamiento adecuado de este sistema permita conocer los reales niveles de natalidad y mortalidad. Se hace referencia a la Encuesta Mundial de Fecundidad y a las encuestas de empleo y desempleo, como fuentes adicionales de informacion, que deberian explotarse al maximo.
