El contexto demografico de las politicas de poblacion en America Latina

Abstract

El analisis detenido de las caracteristicas demograficas de los paises de America Latina revela una clara correspondencia entre el nivel de desarrollo y el grado de transicion demografica alcanzado, observandose diferencias marcadas no solo en las tasas de crecimiento sino en la direccion de los cambios (aceleracion o desaceleracion del crecimiento). Esta heterogeneidad se refleja asimismo al interior de los paises a traves de la existencia de grupos sociales que se encuentran en la fase final, media o inicial de la transicion. Un rasgo distintivo de la region es el elevado nivel de urbanizacion resultante del proceso de migracion interna, constatandose la existencia de paises con procesos de urbanizacion temprano, tardio y reciente, pero siempre de caracter concentrado. El analisis estadistico exhaustivo de los rasgos descritos reviste especial importancia para entender la diversidad de posiciones de los gobiernos frente a los fenomenos demograficos y las politicas destinadas a influir sobre ellos.
