Notas sobre el efecto de un aumento de la educacion sobre la fecundidad

Abstract

Estas notas forman parte del Proyecto Estrategias de Desarrollo y Politicas de Poblacion en America Latina y presentan, en forma sistematica, las hipotesis que permiten esperar un impacto en la fecundidad por un aumento del nivel de educacion. Se postula que a mayor educacion de la pareja, disminuye el nivel de fecundidad siempre que la educacion signifique traspasar el umbral a partir del cual la relacion es significativa. Esta hipotesis general puede explicarse tanto por efectos directos como indirectos. Entre los primeros destacan la mayor capacidad para prever y analizar las consecuencias de un hijo adicional, un aumento de la comunicacion entre esposos y el desempeno de relaciones mas igualitarias lo que facilita la adopcion de medidas para resolver los problemas de la familia. Entre los efectos indirectos destacan el aumento de la motivacion para disminuir el numero de hijos, el retardo de la motivacion para iniciar uniones estables y las condiciones favorables para el uso de medios anticonceptivos.
