Compatibility among population documentation systems to meet the needs of the Latin American region

Abstract

Analisis de las caracteristicas y requerimientos de America Latina considerados relevantes para la discusion de la compatibilidad entre sistemas de documentacion en poblacion y algunas recomendaciones desde el punto de vista de dichas necesidades y del DOCPAL. El criterio central es que cualquier medida para lograr la compatibilidad debe evaluarse a la luz de la satisfaccion de las necesidades de los usuarios, objetivo primordial de los sistemas. La compatibilidad debe darse fundamentalmente a nivel de base de datos en la que en lo posible debe contarse con un sistema de catalogacion descriptiva comun basada (de preferencia en el Manual de Referencia UNISIST) y utilizar un tesauro multilingue. Los documentos a ser ingresados deberan ser de interes para todos los sistemas involucrados y se aconseja que un organismo central - ojala adscrito a Naciones Unidas- sea el responsable de la coordinacion y mantenimiento de los mecanismos de compatibilidad que se adopten.
