Política monetaria, cambiaria y macroprudencial para el desarrollo Volatilidad y crecimiento en América Latina y el Caribe, 1980-2011

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se revisa la evolución de la volatilidad nominal y real en América Latina y el Caribe entre 1980 y 2011, encontrándose que si bien la volatilidad nominal se ha reducido significativamente durante el período, la región continúa experimentando volatilidad real. Debido a la percepción de los hacedores de política de la región acerca de las ventajas de reducir la volatilidad real, no sólo por sus efectos directos sobre el bienestar, sino también sobre el crecimiento económico. Adicionalmente, mostraremos intentos recientes de las autoridades monetarias en América Latina y el Caribe por actuar en forma contracíclica frente al shock externo recibido durante la reciente crisis financiera internacional. Por último, recogemos el estado actual del debate acerca de las herramientas macroprudenciales que pueden complementar otras acciones de política pro-estabilidad real en la región.
