Transformaciones y rezagos: la evolución del empleo agropecuario en América Latina, 2002-2012

Abstract

Durante el período entre inicios de la década del 2000 y principios de la década siguiente, en América Latina el empleo y los salarios registraron una evolución relativamente favorable. En este documento se revisa el desempeño, específicamente, de la productividad y el empleo agropecuarios a nivel regional, con el objetivo de indagar si en este período se achicaron las grandes brechas entre este sector, que suele registrar la productividad laboral y la calidad del empleo más bajas, y el resto de la economía. Se comprueba una reducción de las brechas de productividad no solo a precios constantes sino, de manera altamente inusual, también a precios corrientes, debido a la evolución relativamente favorable de los precios agropecuarios en este período. Buena parte del incremento de la productividad media se debió a la generación de empleo no agropecuario que incentivó el traslado de personas ocupadas previamente en la agricultura familiar. También hay indicios sobre un impacto positivo de cambios intra-sectoriales, pero estos fueron de menor relevancia en el caso del sector agropecuario, mientras que explicaron lamayor parte del aumento de la productividad laboral para el conjunto de los sectores.
