Censos y población indígena en México: algunas reflexiones

Abstract

El presente trabajo hace un recuento y análisis minucioso de los distintos criterios, objetivos y resultados con que se ha censado a la población indígena en México. Se apoya en contribuciones de diversos campos, en especial de la historia y la sociología, para identificar y contrastar los diferentes criterios que han predominado en la determinación de la pertenencia étnica. Se presenta, también, una descripción y comparación de las bases metodológicas de las que se sirven las instancias responsables de la elaboración de los censos de población indígena en México (Consejo Nacional de Población—CONAPO—, Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas —CDI– e Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía —INEGI—). Las conclusiones ofrecen una serie de sugerencias y recomendaciones para complementar, y en cierto sentido mejorar, los métodos actualmente empleados para identificar y censar a la población indígena en el país.
