Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar una propuesta metodológica que posibilite realizar un cálculo sistemático de algunos indicadores económicos básicos utilizados en el análisis del turismo. Estos indicadores se concibieron como elementos que, a falta de cuentas satélites del turismo, permitieran dimensionar la importancia económica del sector en los países latinoamericanos, como asimismo, algunas de sus características más importantes desde la perspectiva de la oferta y la demanda. El trabajo que se da a conocer en estas páginas forma parte de un amplio proyecto coordinado conjuntamente por la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) y la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), orientado a fortalecer los sistemas estadísticos sobre el turismo en los países de la región y a estimular la elaboración de las cuentas satélites correspondientes, instrumentos indispensables para la descripción y el análisis del turismo y la formulación de políticas de desarrollo económico y social sustentables en esa actividad. En síntesis, el objetivo de este documento es orientar a los técnicos de las administraciones nacionales de turismo, de los institutos nacionales de estadística y de los bancos centrales, y a los usuarios en general, sobre la forma de calcular los indicadores económicos e integrarlos al análisis del turismo.
