Lo rural y lo urbano en México: una nueva caracterización a partir de estadísticas nacionales

Abstract

Desde hace 100 años, la definición de ruralidad en México se basa en un criterio de población por el que se consideran rurales las localidades que tienen menos de 2.500 habitantes y urbanas todas las demás. Esta clasificación dicotómica no permite caracterizar adecuadamente los espacios rurales del país, habida cuenta tanto de la creciente pluriactividad de los hogares de esas zonas como del aumento de la conectividad entre localidades, que ha acortado distancias y favorecido la interdependencia entre zonas urbanas y rurales. En este documento se presentan gradientes que van desde las zonas más rurales hasta las localidades decididamente metropolitanas. Estos gradientes combinan variables como el tamaño y la densidad poblacionales, el uso del suelo y el acceso a bienes y servicios, indicado por la distancia a ciudades de 50.000 habitantes o más.
