Participación laboral de las mujeres en América Latina: contribución al crecimiento económico y factores determinantes

Abstract

En los últimos 30 años se produjo un aumento sustancial de la tasa de participación laboral de las mujeres en América Latina, lo que cambió para siempre los mercados laborales y la vida de ellas y de sus familias. Sin embargo, la brecha de participación en relación con los hombres se mantiene por encima de 20 puntos porcentuales, por lo que el margen de mejora es relativamente elevado. Las brechas en el acceso al mercado laboral no solo tienen un importante impacto social, sino también un costo económico, por cuanto afectan la productividad e impiden el crecimiento al pleno potencial. En este documento se presentan aspectos teóricos y empíricos de modelos que exploran los vínculos entre la participación laboral femenina y el PIB. Asimismo, se analizan los múltiples factores que afectan directa o indirectamente la decisión de las mujeres de incorporarse al mercado laboral y sobre los cuales la política pública puede incidir para incentivar la mayor participación de mujeres en actividades remuneradas.
