Abstract

En consideración a los amplios espectros de variación climática, características geográficas y microclimas que existen en Costa Rica, el seguro agropecuario podría desempeñar un papel crucial en la estrategia integral del manejo de riesgos climáticos. El mercado de seguros en Costa Rica se encuentra en una etapa inicial de desarrollo, caracterizada por altos costos de comercialización, elevada concentración en arroz de secano, tarifas inasequibles para micro y pequeños productores, variedad limitada de esquemas de aseguramiento, pólizas inadecuadas a los perfiles productivos y de riesgo de la población objetivo, falta de información pertinente, una cultura del aseguramiento embrionaria y canales de distribución inapropiados e insuficientes.
