Estrategias de desarrollo bajo en carbono en megaciudades de América Latina

Abstract

Aun cuando América Latina y el Caribe generan tan solo un 5% de los gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) del planeta, los efectos del cambio climático pueden ser devastadores para la región. l desafío de reducir dichas emisiones es pues importante y requiere determinar una estrategia de desarrollo sostenible bajo en carbono para la región, con acciones de mitigación y adaptación de carácter urgente. A nivel global, las ciudades contienen a más del 50% de la población, consumen dos tercios del total de energía consumida, y concentran la industria y la infraestructura, entre otros, transformándolas en las principales responsables de emisiones de CO2. Por lo tanto, al momento de visualizar y definir una estrategia de desarrollo sostenible bajo en carbono, se hace necesario referirse de manera particular a las zonas urbanas. Dada la gran presencia de primacía en América Latina, esta situación nos lleva a concentrar nuestra atención en metrópolis de la región, muchas de las cuales corresponden a megaciudades, o ciudades en vías de serlo.
