Metaverse Pioneers: Leadership Personalities Driving Metaverse Integration in Virtual Teams

Abstract

The metaverse presents a transformative solution to key challenges faced by virtual teams, including communication barriers, trust-building, and the lack of non-verbal cues. By enabling immersive and interactive collaboration, the metaverse redefines how virtual teams operate. However, its successful integration depends on leaders whose personality traits align with the demands of this emerging technology. This study examines how virtual team leaders’ traits, based on the Five Factor Model (FFM), influence their intention to use the metaverse and their personal innovativeness. Using a scenario-based online survey (N=126), findings reveal that conscientiousness and extraversion significantly increase metaverse adoption intention, while openness to experience enhances personal innovativeness. These results highlight the metaverse as a technological catalyst for collaboration and innovation. By exploring the interplay between leadership traits and advanced digital tools, this research offers valuable insights into the metaverse’s potential to revolutionize virtual teams and reshape the future of work.
