The Political Economy of Gender Equality

Abstract

Political institutions have long been dominated by men, and the majority still are. These institutions, in turn, have placed restrictions on the rights and freedoms of women and girls. Progress has been made in the battle for equality, but inequities persist. The first part of this paper discusses the motivations for male leadership to grant women liberties. The second part flips the perspective and considers women's own participation in the political processes that design and uphold their rights. Innovative research in political economy from both of these perspectives continues to grow, and there remain many exciting possibilities for future research.
