Comment vont les enfants ?

Abstract

De nombreux indicateurs psychiques et physiques montrent que la jeunesse fait face à une crise de la santé mentale. Ces résultats proviennent généralement d’enquêtes se concentrant sur des tranches d’âge relativement élevées de la jeunesse (à partir de 15 ou 18 ans et allant jusqu’à 25 ans) et suivent rarement les répondants dans le temps. Grâce à l’enquête britannique Understanding Society, nous analysons le bien-être subjectif des jeunes âgés de 10 à 15 ans au cours des 10 dernières années. Les pré-adolescents d’aujourd’hui se disent moins heureux que ceux de 1994 ou même de 2016, avec une perte moyenne de 0, 5 points de satisfaction dans la vie (sur une échelle allant de 1 à 7). Cette chute du bien-être est particulièrement marquée chez les jeunes filles et les jeunes des ménages les plus modestes. Cependant, certains déterminants comme la pratique d’une activité sportive extra-scolaire, une utilisation limitée du smartphone ou encore le temps passé avec les parents, ont tendance à améliorer la satisfaction de vie des plus jeunes.
