Abstract

Dans cet article, nous montrons que les attitudes populistes qui conduisent aux votes et aux mouvements sociaux extrêmes peuvent s’expliquer par la panne de l’ascenseur social, à savoir l’absence de mobilité sociale. Cette explication semble s’appliquer à l’ensemble des 27 pays européens étudiés. Elle surprend particulièrement dans les pays qui, comme la Belgique et la France, consacrent environ 30% de leur PIB à la protection sociale. Il semblerait que ces États providence aient naïvement cru qu’il suffisait de lutter contre la pauvreté et les inégalités sociales pour relancer l’ascenseur social. Cela ne semble pas être le cas.
