Abstract

***** Calophysus macropterus, also known as mota is a small catfish captured in the Orinoco and Amazon regions. In recent decades mota fishing and marketing has generated intense public debate due to allegations of using illegal bait for fishing it, as well as for containing high levels of mercury that could potentially harm the consumers’ health. This study uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate the interest and willingness of traders and fishermen in Leticia, Colombia, to contribute to the use of appropriate bait, reduction of pollution in sold fish, and good management of fishing sizes. Through a choice experiment this document finds that on average traders are willing to pay $1.719 (Colombian) pesos more per kg of mota, in order to stop fishing below the minimum size allowed. Meanwhile for fishermen the problem of contamination of fish is more relevant for fishermen and, on average, they would be willing to stop receiving $1.333 pesos per kg of mota sold aiming to reduce the levels of fish contamination. Based on this information a participatory assessment with representatives of both communities was held, through which the results of the economic exercise were corroborated and public policy suggestions were made to the relevant institutions.
