Los déficits gemelos: el déficit externo y el déficit público

Abstract

El reciente Incremento inesperado en el déficit comercial mensual de Estados Unidos (antes de noviembre de 1989), ha despertado una nueva serie de diagnósticos errados por parte de los economistas y de los voceros del mundo financiero. De acuerdo al periódico The Wall Street Journal "muchos economistas están de acuerdo en que grandes disminuciones en el déficit presupuestal de los Estados Unidos, son necesarias antes de que una consiguiente mejoría en el déficit comercial pueda ocurrir. Esto es porque el déficit presupuestal alimenta un enorme apetito en los Estados Unidos hacia bienes importados y de capital extranjero, que sobrepasa la capacidad de la nación para exportar.
