Abstract

Abstract : In this paper we are interested in investigate the consumer behavior and their consumption patterns in Medellin households. To this end we analyses and compute the Engel curves for urban households, which relates the total expenditure to expenditure in specific goods. We perform three empirical models: semiparametric models, to capture non-linearities, models of instrumental variables because of endogeneity and Tobit models due to censoring of dependent variable. We conclude that the Food and Beverage, Tobacco and Clothing and Footwear, respond to the Engel Law; moreover depending on the expense segment in which the families are located for some will be a normal or inferior good or luxury.
