Abstract

The avocado (Persea american Mill) is the fifth most important tropical fruit in the world, measured in terms of volume and cultivated area, of which Colombia, in 2010, was the fifth major producer, factor which reflects the country´s important export potential. However, despite its comparatively high production, the country must import in order to satisfy domestic demand. During the last decade, some regions within had characterized by leading avocado production, such as Montes de María, region of the Colombian Caribbean Coast. Nonetheless, the latter has been surpassed by departments such as Tolima and Antioquia, which in the last 20 years have made significant investments in crop modernization.
