Población y Ley de Zipf en Colombia y la Costa Caribe, 1912 - 1993

Abstract

El estudio del tamano de las ciudades es de gran importancia y relevancia, en la medida que está estrechamente relacionado con el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo urbano. En el presente documento se realiza un análisis del tamano de las ciudades en Colombia y la Costa Caribe y la dinámica de su distribución a través del tiempo. Primero se indaga sobre el cumplimiento de la regularidad empírica conocida en la literatura como la Ley de Zipf y, posteriormente, se determina el nivel de persistencia de la distribución poblacional a través del tiempo. Con base en la información censal a partir de 1912, los resultados indican que la Ley de Zipf no se cumple para los municipios de la región Caribe pero sí a nivel nacional. Esto puede ser explicado por el menor grado de desarrollo urbano de los municipios de la región Caribe, así como la gran concentración de municipios con baja densidad poblacional. Para el caso de los niveles de persistencia fue posible establecer que, tanto en el caso de los municipios de Colombia como los de la Costa Caribe, existen fuertes evidencias sobre una alta persistencia en la distribución del tamano de las ciudades de un período a otro.
