Abstract

Nonetheless it is difficult to identify the "stylized facts" that allow characterizing the evolution of these variables, the results of the review lead to the following conclusions: The incidence of rural poverty tends to decrease in the long run. However, this trend is negatively affected by the economic cycle and by the way the rural sector interacts with the rest of the economy. The share of rural within total employment decreases while it tends to acquire characteristics that make it more similar to urban employment. This happens as rural employment "tertiarizes". There is an antirural bias that enhances the gap between rural and urban income levels. However, the economic reforms of the beginning of the decade seem to have had a positive role in reducing the degree of concentration of rural income.
