Sous terre se trouve un vaste réseau caché de conduits et de câbles qui acheminent des produits et des services essentiels à la société d'aujourd'hui. Ces infrastructures souterraines comprennent notamment les câbles de télécommunication, les câbles électriques, les conduites de gaz, les égouts, les canalisations d'eau, les tuyaux d'évacuation des eaux pluviales, les oléoducs, etc. Leur enfouissement généralement peu profond et leur densité croissante amènent les entrepreneurs à les heurter lors de travaux de réparation ou de réhabilitation en tout genre.
