Abstract

Quebecers and Food: Local Origin Reassures, Transparency Builds Trust, and Literacy Prepares the Future Since 2019, the CIRANO Baromètre de la confiance des consommateurs québécois à l’égard des aliments has tracked the evolution of Quebecers’ perceptions, knowledge, and behaviors regarding food. The 2025 edition (De Marcellis-Warin & Peignier, 2025), conducted with a representative sample of 1,003 Quebecers, takes place in a post-pandemic context where food prices remain persistently high, amid a global climate marked by geopolitical and trade tensions. The Baromètre 2025 provides particularly rich insights. Quebecers’ confidence in their food has regained some momentum, but it remains fragile and rests on three pillars: proximity, transparency, and the credibility of stakeholders. This nuanced picture highlights a dual challenge: meeting Quebecers’ expectations in terms of proximity and transparency, while strengthening citizens’ ability to understand and act within an increasingly complex food system. Les Québécois et l’alimentation : l’origine locale rassure, la transparence inspire confiance et la littératie prépare l’avenir Depuis 2019, le Baromètre CIRANO de la confiance des consommateurs québécois à l’égard des aliments suit l’évolution des perceptions, des connaissances et des comportements de la population québécoise en matière d’alimentation. L’édition 2025 (De Marcellis-Warin & Peignier, 2025) réalisée auprès d’un échantillon de 1003 Québécois, représentatif de la population québécoise s’inscrit dans un contexte post-pandémique où les prix des aliments demeurent élevés de façon persistante, dans un climat mondial marqué par des tensions géopolitiques et commerciales. La Baromètre 2025 apporte un éclairage particulièrement riche. La confiance des Québécois envers leur alimentation retrouve un certain souffle, mais elle demeure fragile et repose sur trois piliers : la proximité, la transparence et la crédibilité des acteurs.
