Cleaning the Census of Retail Trade Product Lines Data

Abstract

Understanding the products that retail establishments sell is critical for properly defining product markets and official statistics. The increasing importance of establishments in general merchandising and non-store retail industries has exacerbated problems with using industries to approximate product markets. However, the Census of Retail Trade contains many establishments that do not report sales by product. This report details a method to impute sales for these establishments using information on the establishment's industry, size, trade, and firm. I also provide estimates of the error rate associated with this imputation.
