Comparing Revenues in the LBD-SSEL, CMF/ASM, and QFR

Abstract

I construct a measure of firm-level revenue for the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) and compare it to two other sources of firm-level revenue: the Census of Manufactures / Annual Survey of Manufactures (CMF/ASM) and the Quarterly Financial Report (QFR). I have three main findings: (1) I can measure revenue for a large fraction of the LBD in most years, though to do so I must use lagged values of revenue. (2) Many of the QFR submasters do not have LBD revenue, and thus could be used to impute revenue for the LBD; very few CMF observations are lacking in LBD revenue. (3) LBD revenue seems to be falling over time when compared to revenue from either the CMF/ASM or the QFR, though this effect seems to be driven by the tails of the distribution; in general the three measures of revenue are in agreement in the center of the distribution.
