El nivel de precios bajo distintos patrones mercancía

Abstract

El propósito del ensayo es comprender el funcionamiento monetario del patrón mercancía en sus grandes variantes, históricas y conceptuales: ladrillo común para construcción, monometálico, bimetálico, simetálico y materias primas. Distinguimos entre el mercado de stocks (dinero) y el mercado de flujos (mercancías), y aplicamos sistemáticamente el aparato marshalliano de curvas de oferta y demanda a un tópico fascinante. Completamos el ejercicio teórico analizando dos ejemplos históricos: la reanudación del patrón oro a la paridad de preguerra en Gran Bretaña tras las guerras napoleónicas y en EEUU tras la guerra civil, no obstante las grandes inflaciones que habían sufrido. Concluimos que, hasta bien entrado el siglo pasado, la estabilidad del nivel de precios fue un objetivo de suprema importancia.
