Abstract

In the last twenty years, every time someone puts forward the official dollarization of the Argentine economy, the usual answer emphasizes the loss of seigniorage, and the proposal is discarded. Yet every good has a cost. Which is the opportunity cost of seigniorage? We estimate here both the cost involved in keeping the seigniorage and its benefit. We conclude that the cost would be much higher than the benefit.
